“You want me to move where?” I yelled at my boss.

“Ro-man-i-a,” he repeated, like I had to read his lips or something.

See, here’s the thing. I’ve always lived in the USA – my whole life is here. I am an American, through and through. I’ve never visited another country let alone ever thought about moving to one.

“I hope you mean Romania, USA,” I said. Yeah, that must be it. There’s some city named Romania in the States. I was just about to heave a sigh of relief when I noticed him smile and shake his head.

“Romania-across-the-ocean-Romania,” he said. “We’re opening a branch there and the board wants you to head it up.” He smiled like a Cheshire cat and smacked me on the back.

Oh my God! Where the heck is Romania anyway? I rushed to my computer and Googled a map of Romania. I found the small country bordered by Bulgaria on the south, Serbia and Hungary on the west the Ukraine on the north and the Black Sea on the east.

“While you’re at it, Google international moving company,” my boss said. “You’ll need one to move you. I’ve heard they’re very helpful.”

HELPFUL…HELPFUL? I wanted to shout. I needed more than help to pull this off! How about a scientist that could clone me…one ‘me’ to go to Romania and be the big-shot boss, and one ‘me’ to stay here with my little black book, my cool condo and sports car! Could I even move my car over there?

So many questions, so little time! He wanted me there in a month. I found a list of international moving companies and chose the one with the best rating on the Better Business Bureau. The international moving company agent assured me they could move my car over there, so that made me feel a bit better. She even put me in touch with a Real Estate Agent. I had my secretary sort all that out. She knows my taste.

Having set the wheels in motion and arriving at a date in two short weeks when the international moving company would simply come and pack up my life into an overseas container, I set about trying to find out as much as I could about Romania.

Okay…Romania capital - Bucharest. Language…Romanian, Hungarian, and German, none of which would help me much. I had high school German, that’s about it. Hopefully, I’d have interpreters!
Let’s see…currency…Leu.
Black Sea resorts, hiking and skiing in the Carpathian Mountains…this was starting to look much more promising. Oh, and the Transylvania region of Count Dracula legend. This was definitely shaping up!

I think I’m beginning to see this might not be so bad. At least I know who to call – my international moving company – if I can’t stand it and want to move back. Piece of cake! Romania, are you ready for me?

If we all kept our refrigerators cleaned out along with keeping an eye on what outdated items exist in it, we would probably all have healthier meals throughout the day. Most people, however, tend to forget just how important cleaning out their fridges can be and just accept the fact that foods will become moldy and that you will have to throw away a fair portion of the food that you store every year. There are a few things that you can do to prevent mold from growing in your refrigerator, but one of the best things is just to simply keep track of what food is in your refrigerator and how long it has been in there.

Some outdated items are fine as long as they have not been opened. Even things like mayonnaise or sour cream can last quite a while as long as they are still in sealed containers. But, after these are opened, their shelf life drastically decreases and the chance that mold will start to grow inside them goes up significantly. When you break the seal on an item such as this, you let the air in your home and your refrigerator inside the container. If mold spores are in the air in your home (and they probably are), these will get inside the container, as well. This does not mean that they will start to grow immediately, but the longer it remains uneaten, the bigger the chance that it will become the home of a mold colony.

Something else to keep an eye on is sour cream. Sour cream is notorious for becoming molded and this is unfortunately one of the foods that cannot be saved once it does. Once you start to see mold spots growing in your tub of sour cream, it is time to throw it out. This is a porous, highly moist food item and like other foods that meet that criteria, once it becomes contaminated by mold on the top, the whole container is, as well.

Other porous items that you might not keep in your refrigerator that are popular with mold are baked items. These are things like bread, cookies, cakes, and just about anything else that you bake in the oven. These should be thrown away and never eaten.

Other moist items in your refrigerator that tend to have mold problems are things like jelly and jam. Other spreads such as marmalade can also become molded if left uneaten long enough, so these should be completely discarded as well as soon as mold spots begin to appear.

Most people love a beautiful blanket of snow on their lawn during the wintertime, but they are not aware of the fact that there can be a very unwelcome visitor lurking underneath that snow. The worst thing is, they probably will not know about it until the snow is already melted and the disease has done its damage.

Snow mold typically becomes a problem when the blanket of snow does not melt for a long period of time. The mold begins to grow when a thick, wet blanket of snow falls on ground that is not frozen.

The symptoms of snow mold generally consist of circular patches of dead grass that are usually 3 to 12 inches in diameter. In extreme cases, you might not be able to tell that these patches are circles at all because most of the grass has died. Pink snow mold, caused by Microdochium nivale, can look white initially and when it matures, it turns from a pale pink to a deep salmon-like color. Gray snow mold, caused by species in the genus Typhula, is anywhere from gray to white in color. It is a good idea to determine whether you are dealing with gray or pink snow mold, because gray snow mold does not tend to damage more than just the blades of the grass. Pink snow mold can completely kill the roots if it is left untreated.

Snow molds are usually active around temperatures just above freezing in somewhat wet conditions. It can grow not only when snow covers a lawn, but also when autumn leaves cover it for a long period of time, as well. Any kind of grass can be affected by this disease, but it has been noted that Kentucky bluegrass lawns are some of the least likely to suffer severe damage.

If you want to prevent snow mold from growing on your lawn, one of the best things that you can do is take care of it around the end of summer. As long as the grass keeps growing, you should keep having it mowed. If you apply any fertilizers to your lawn during the fall, you should apply them over six weeks before you expect the grass to stop growing. Nitrogen fertilizer should not be used around the time the grass stops growing or it will cause a burst of growth and give the mold more to feed on while the snow is on top of it.

If you have had a home or some kind of building submerged in water, by way of either rain, or some kind of flood, then you are probably well aware of just how frustrating of a task drying it out can be. If you have not had to do this before, then you’re in luck, because here are some different ways to start drying it out.

One of the most unexpected things that can happen is a flood. And sometimes, the water can get high enough to where it can get inside of your home, or building, and drying this water out is a long arduous process. And, depending on the building, hot air drying techniques can do more harm than do help.

The very first thing you should do before drying your building out, is to make sure that there is no room for electrical hazard. You should make sure that all of the power in your home is completely off. You shouldn’t just be aware of the electrical hazards; you should keep an eye out for biological ones, because the flood water could very well be infected with human waste, chemicals, dead bodies, and countless amounts of bacteria that could cause serious medical harm. It is important that you protect your eyes, hands, mouth, and wear a respirator. You should wash your hands very thoroughly after cleaning, and once again before eating. It is recommended that you use strong disinfectant hand soap.

It is also important that you keep documentation of the damage done to your home. It is preferred that you document the damage with photos and a video camera. This will be a big help when making an insurance claim and finding out what compensation you will be eligible for.

You should also take time to make temporary repairs to prevent more water from getting into your home and causing further damage. Once again, these repairs should only be temporary.

A recommended place to begin drying out your home is the attic. If there is any wet insulation, you should remove it immediately, because it is cumbersome, and holds a lot of moisture for a long period of time causing more damage to the foundation, such as wood rot, rust, and drywall damage. It is also important to remove anything else that has water on it, or in it. You should make sure, after these measures are taken, that you keep your home cool, and that air is circulating. You might want to keep your windows open for a short amount of time, as long as it’s not raining.

If you find yourself with a little bit of money and want to invest it, it only makes sense to seek out Sacramento investment advice. But not all advice is the same. Here are a few questions to ask yourself when deciding who to talk to about that extra cash:

1. Do I just want investment advice? There is a wide variety of planners and advisers out there today – do you want to limit your advice to investments, or would you benefit from someone that provides the whole financial picture?

2. How often do I want advice? If you are receiving Sacramento investment advice, you could be getting it regularly (i.e., monthly, quarterly, etc.), or you may just need one or two meetings. Talk with an adviser about this, and see which option fits you the best.

3. Do I need face-to-face meetings? Many advisers today are offering correspondence via the phone or over the internet, via email. Which one would you prefer? If you don’t want to set up meeting times for face-to-face, then look for an adviser that offers Sacramento investment advice online instead.

Asking yourself these important questions can help limit the playing field and narrow your options down to what you need the most.

Something that a lot of people don’t know about mold is that it is everywhere we are. It’s hard to escape mold entirely, because it’s in the air we breathe. It is a form of fungi that grows all around the world and there are countless species of it that can be almost any color you can think of. A lot of them are harmless, but the ones that aren’t, such as toxic black mold, are the ones that most people are concerned about growing in their homes. Along with being unsightly, it can cause many health complications, especially if someone living or working in the affected area is allergic to it.

How does it get into your building? It usually comes from outdoors, either due to water leaking into the house from outside or because the humidity in a home is too high. Areas with water damage such as roofs, flooded areas, crawl spaces, and plumbing leaks are often sites for mold infections.

Why should you worry about it? Aside from the health complications that some molds can cause, it has been known to grow on furniture, clothing stuffed into the backs of closets, and even children’s toys. All these items need to be cleaned thoroughly and sterilized before being used again, if they’re used again at all. Some items like clothing are easier to throw away than they are to clean. The structural damage that mold can cause to your home overtime can be substantial and as soon as you discover a mold infestation, it’s best to either call in a professional to get rid of it or, if it’s a smaller infection, remove the mold and clean the area yourself using the different testing and cleaning kits that are available on the market today.

Who should worry about mold the most? The people who are most affected by mold in their homes or places of business are infants and small children, the elderly, people with respiratory conditions such as asthma or emphysema, anyone with a weakened immune system, such as people with HIV or AIDS, chemotherapy patients, anyone who has just had surgery, and pregnant women.

How do you prevent mold? The easiest way to prevent mold is to make sure your home is a cool and dry environment. Bathrooms and kitchens should be paid special attention to. Clean up spills and leaking water quickly and do not allow standing water in any part of your home, even the basement, because the infestation can and will spread to other areas of your home. Do your best to direct heat and moisture from clothes dryers, dish washers, stoves, and bathrooms outside your home with the appropriate fans and vents.
